Summary

This bibliography was compiled in 1942 to celebrate the centenary of the first edition of Dead Souls, but did not appear in print, given the circumstances of the time. It includes publications of Gogol’s text, the author’s statements about his “poem”, contemporary responses, studies devoted to Dead Souls, the use of its themes and images in criticism, journalism and belles-lettres, as well as the works of Lenin and Stalin. Moreover, the bibliography contains information about the iconography of the “poem”, stage versions of it, and the attempts to counterfeit the fragments from the second volume.
