For many years Vladimir Nabokov’s commentary to Eugene Onegin was not available for non-English readers. Just recently two different Russian versions of the book have appeared to celebrate the bicentenary of Pushkin and the centenary of his commentator. Unfortunately, both publications are characterized by mistranslations and the insufficient competence of the editors. A demonstration of the most typical examples of these inaccuracies is no substitute for an analysis of the merits and deficiencies of the original, which remains the centre of attention for the reviewers throughout.
