Amid the rumble of the war
This tomb thief travels swiftly
Dragging a corpse over the raspy slabs.
The boat is light. The blaze engulfs the houses.
He's dragged it over. He comes back and wanes.
Now only this: O nightingale's sweet voice!
It carries over:
"Fare thee well, my love."
He stops alone among the serpentine palazzos
Circling the square. There is but an unmindful haze.
His own voice lodged in a luxurious home
Nods to him, bursts out of the open window, sings.
And he observes the brightly flaming fibers
And strains to kiss the flowing, fleeting lips,
Barely alive and crying out in terror
Of reuniting -- though it's dust, and rot, and void.
The horses on the arch dream of the double-decker
Berlin with regiments foxtrotting on horseback.
The drowsy dawn has spun the dogs around the city
And outlines of the peaks are fading on the moon.
And coming at him from behind a deep wall,
He hears a disconnected voice that says:
"You rushed again into the golden chambers,
You entered the lighthearted labyrinth."
The table set, the voice feasts with his comrade,
They contemplate the breadth of shoreless wine.
Behind the glass covered with dreary blizzard,
Two heads are turned around towards a fight.
