In vestments made of ancient words
I stood before a marble choir
And dipped in the front rows my pointed visage,
But from the choir a lily came to me.
Within her eyes a fathomless depth swayed,
The clink of the domestic knitting sparkled.
Up on the hill a fountain glowed in red
And characters theatrically cackled.
And life before me was a garden,
But not, alas, a supple Polish garden.
Now that I step out of the columns of
My nights, nights of sombriloquence,
Among the crowded hearths, how can I live
Wearing a hero's tragic cape
And given to retreating every time
Habitual two steps, with back-thrown nape.
