Yes, I've been weighing for a year,
But still my art evades my understanding.
The autumn chill already fills the gardens,
And all around there are new children of my friends.
In vain I studied books: the old ones,
Dressed in stern parchments, and the new ones
Smelling of ink, fresh from the presses.
Some say that poetry is a flash of insight,
Some say it's composition or arrangement.
Once in a while
I dream an asylum for those who lost their mind,
More often, a garden full of carefree tweeting —
Dreams equally unbearable.
But often I wander off and, as I used to,
I grab the paper without much thinking,
And there's a noticeable condensation
Of elements in chaos, and quick motion,
And images under the furious ray —
For a brief moment. Then all is gone.
I'd like to be a scholar: by degrees
He hones my thought and brings it to a closure.
While all we have is this one blazing instant
And months and years of patient toil and study,
As if under a splashing moon, in a
Monastery.
There's shepherd's purse and sleeping beauty's shamrocks,
Bars on the window, the light behind the bars
Hangs in the dark. And once again I'm trying
To reassemble the disjointed chain
By fitting link to link with sluggish fingers.
And then it seems I knew it all
Back in the years of youth that I have squandered.
The mournful bells toll no more on the hills:
All funerals are held in early morning,
Without laboriously painful dirges,
As if the generations of the living bodies
Preserved the substance of the dead.
And from my gilded library I follow
The swirling dance of peoples going round,
I read all through my books between the lines,
Engrossed in the obscure Chaldean lore.
The same black raven sits on my desktop,
The forerunner and usher of Apollo.
But the industrious noises from the houses
Disperse the darkness and dispel my yearnings.
A new quotidian life is shaping,
And all the different songs
Are sung when dusk descends on single-storied towns.
They rise at dawn and with a firm belief in
Their first-born right, prepare to govern calmly
Until the advent of the golden age.
And my unease subsides little by little,
A child awakens in the swaddling cloth,
It cries to the amusement of the nanny,
And the old woman dances with the youthful crowd.
